Idyllic, mystic, and singular, the blue-green lake Königssee is imbedded into grand mountain scenery. The mountains are very high, but there are beautiful routes across to the next valleys. To see the sun rising over the steep rocks of the Stony Sea is really worth the effort. Alpine pastures are on the edges of the mountains and you’ll walk from mountain hut to mountain hut with exciting views to the Alps and glaciers. Some of you may know the city of Berchtesgaden where you’ll find the “eagle’s nest,” and also an interesting information center about the sad time and history of Obersalzberg, Hitler’s Mountain Resort.

Demanding walking days with tours of 3 to 6 hours to walk. You are crossing from valley to valley by using a former salt trail or walking over beautiful alpine pastures. Your trails are running close to the edge of the mountain walls and you will have spectacular views. You will walk in the low alpine area and good fitness and equipment are expected. There are public busses (going around the mountains) and you may use them to go to the next hotel (on rainy days)
The accommodations listed below are examples of those usually used on the tour. Depending on availability, you may be booked in a different accommodation of equal quality.
You can take the train from Munich or Salzburg to the Berchtesgaden train station. From there you can take a taxi to the starting hotel. Arrive at your leisure!
At 9:00 AM we’ll transfer you to the entrance of the national park of Berchtesgaden where the walking portion will start for the day. A beautiful trail will lead you up to a former miners hut and on over an alpine pasture down to the Saalach Valley. Along the way you’ll visit the nice village of Weißbach and pass the impressive Seisenberg Gorge.
Approximately 5.5 hours walking. +550/-500
We’ll start the day with a transfer to the edge of the Grass Mountain where you’ll start up to the alpine pastures. Today there’s also the possibility to walk up to a small summit with a wonderful view of the Alps and glaciers, and perhaps of the lake Zellersee. Approximately 5 hours walking. +930/-500
Today you’ll take one of the most beautiful alpine pasture hiking routes in Austria. Walking along the steep walls of the Hochkönig, you will trek from mountain hut to mountain hut over alpine pastures. A pastoral idyll as if freshly painted for a picture book.
Take the bus to the valley or just relax in the hotel. Use the bus for free with local guest card!
In the morning you will take the bus upwards to Arthurhaus, where you start with your walking tour gently down along the old minders path to the Salzach Valley. Here you will see the fantastic fortress of Hohenwerfen. It’s up to you if you would like to walk up the hill and see the bird-of-prey flight demonstrations and the collection of weapons. Afterwards you’ll take the train to Golling.
Today you’ll walk up to the peak of the Jenner with a panoramic view of the whole tour route. A beautiful trail will lead us through the former archbishop hunting valley to the “wall.” There will be steep stone walls to the left, the right, and in front of you. You may not see the trail at first but it goes up and up to the alpine pastures and to the frontier of Austria and Germany. Again, it’s incredible scenery, and a very comfortable ride down into the valley by cable car. When you look right, you may just see the “eagle’s nest.”
Your tour ends today. Or have an extended stay at the lake Königssee.
