This is a region shaped by tides, where the landscape constantly shifts between sand and sea. At low tide, you’ll see mudflats, mussel beds, salt marshes, and sandbanks; at high tide, it’s a different world. Dotted with islands of all sizes, the Frisian Sea is home to seals, porpoises, and millions of birds that nest or stop here on their migration. It’s one of the last places where nature can still do its thing on a large scale.
You’ll also explore the IJsselmeer, a large freshwater lake, and its peaceful shoreline full of traditional fishing villages and historic harbor towns.
Some of the highlights include the islands of Texel and Terschelling, with their long sandy beaches, quiet villages, and beautiful nature; all perfect to discover by bike. On the mainland in North Holland and Friesland, you’ll cycle through open countryside, charming villages, and picture-perfect harbor towns. It’s a dream destination for anyone who loves exploring by bike.

The bicycles on board is a unisex city bike with a low-entry and a riding position that is upright and comfortable. The bike is handmade in the Netherlands by Azor, specially designed by Boat Bike Tours. The bike consists of a lightweight aluminum frame and is equipped with responsive roller brakes (handbrake), a Shimano 7 speed nexus drive, Selle-Royal gel saddle (adjustable), an easy to use lock (fixed on frame) and the Schwalbe Marathon anti-puncture tyre. This all results in a lightweight, stable and reliable bike, good for many miles on the saddle.
The E-bike is an Azor Steps with Nexus 7 gears and hand brakes. The crank Shimano motor (400 WH) offers 4 support levels, The E-bikes have a comfortable gel saddle and a lock on the frame (or a comparable brand/model).
Electric bikes can be rented for this tour (€ 160 per person). We advise you only to rent an electric bike if you have first tried one at home. They’re heavier than regular bikes and therefore can be difficult to maneuver.
The cook prepares all meals: a substantial breakfast and a three-course dinner of very good quality. A packed lunch may be prepared after breakfast. Tea and coffee will be ready when you arrive on board in the afternoon. There’s a bar on board with reasonably-priced beer, wine, and soft drinks.
If you have special dietary wishes (vegetarian meals, lactose intolerance or gluten-free diet), then please indicate this when you book your tour. Vegetarian meals are always available, but we need to know in advance; in all other cases we will check the possibilities for the tour of your choice. In some cases, a small fee for preparing special meals will be charged. This mainly applies to lactose or gluten-free meals.
Unfortunately, we cannot offer vegan meals. This is because the kitchens in our ships are not large enough to guarantee that the food can be prepared completely vegan. The available space on board is limited, so the chefs cannot store the necessary tools and supplies to prepare vegan food.
Important observations for the Sail & Bike program:
A little bit of adventure is a part of every Sail & Bike tour: the departure and arrival day and the location – Enkhuizen – are a certainty, 100%. For the rest, the planned daily sailing routes are partially dependent on the strength and direction of the winds and – on the Wadden Sea – high and low tide. The skipper decides the best route to be taken day by day, and discusses the options with his guests. The crew does everything in its power to enable the program to run according to plan and to offer you as fascinating, varied and active a week as possible, in which nature and culture play a major part. It is, however, also possible that departure times and the time spent on the water – and even the order of the program itself – may be adjusted. Enjoy the ride and let yourself be led by the elements! Whenever possible, various passages will be undertaken fully rigged and anyone who would like to help the crew to sail and steer the boat is welcome to do so. This is of course absolutely up to you and no sailing experience is necessary.
The accommodations listed below are examples of those usually used on the tour. Depending on availability, you may be booked in a different accommodation of equal quality.
Embarkation and check-in where the crew will welcome you on board is at 2 p.m. near the beautiful center of Enkhuizen and close to the railway station.
After everyone is checked in the captain will give a introduction to your sailing hotel and the tour leaders give a overview of the week to come. After all the necessary safety instructions are given the ship will depart to your first destination of the week, Medemblik.
Following dinner your tour leaders will guide you through this historic town now known for its sailing culture.
In the morning, after a thorough bike fitting, you’ll head out for your first ride.
We’ll split into two groups: one guide will lead a longer route, while the other takes a shorter trail. The highlight for both is the charming village of Twisk; a former peat-mining town that never knew great poverty and has remained beautifully preserved.
After the ride, the ship continues on to Texel, the largest of the Dutch North Sea islands.
Please note: if weather conditions aren’t in our favor, we may spend the night in Den Oever instead.
Texel is a cyclist’s dream, with diverse landscapes, charming villages, and an excellent network of bike paths.
Today, your guides will take you on a ride around the island, showcasing its natural beauty and local character.
A highlight of the day is a visit to Ecomare, the island’s seal sanctuary and marine center. While their primary mission is rescuing and rehabilitating seals and birds, Ecomare also offers insight into the region’s unique ecosystem and wildlife through engaging exhibits.
Today is a full day of sailing.
As we make our way to the next island, Terschelling, the captain and crew will introduce you to the basics of sailing aboard this impressive ship. The journey takes us through the Wadden Sea; a UNESCO World Heritage site known for its shifting sandbanks and rich wildlife. Keep an eye out for seals resting on the sandbars as we glide through this unique landscape.
A generous lunch will be served on board while under sail.
In the afternoon, we’ll arrive on Terschelling, an island dotted with quaint villages nestled between polder and dunes along its 30-kilometer length.
Dinner is not included this evening, giving you the chance to explore the island and enjoy one of its many cozy restaurants.
After a day of sailing, today is all about cycling.
Terschelling is a paradise for bike lovers, offering over 70 kilometers of cycling paths that wind through stunning nature and charming villages. The island has four main villages, with West-Terschelling being the largest, home to cozy pubs, local shops, and the island’s famous landmark: the 400-year-old Brandaris lighthouse, visible from far across the sea.
A must-see is the heathland of De Boschplaat, a wild and protected nature reserve filled with mudflats, beaches, and rolling dunes. With a bit of luck, you may spot ducks, spoonbills, black-winged stilts, or even great black-backed gulls.
After a full day of cycling and exploring, you’ll return to the ship to relax. In the late afternoon, we’ll set sail once again. This time crossing the Wadden Sea to Harlingen, the most important harbor town in the province of Friesland.
Today’s bike tour takes you through the heart of Friesland, with a visit to the historic town of Franeker.
Here, you’ll explore the UNESCO-listed Eise Eisinga Planetarium; the oldest working planetarium in the world. After the visit, your ride continues through the wide-open Frisian countryside, passing peaceful rural villages on the way to Makkum, a quaint harbor town on the eastern shore of Lake IJsselmeer.
For those opting for the longer route, the tour also includes a stop in Bolsward — one of the famous Eleven Frisian Cities, known for its rich history and charming canals.
Today’s ride takes you from Makkum to Stavoren.
The shorter route leads through the historic trading town of Hindeloopen, known for its distinctive decorative painting style and the First Frisian Museum of Ice Skating; a must for fans of Dutch winter traditions.
The longer route winds along several Frisian lakes, offering a different perspective on the region’s scenic beauty.
In the late afternoon, the ship will set sail from Stavoren, crossing the IJsselmeer to the charming port town of Enkhuizen.
End of your tour: Disembarkation after breakfast until 9.30 a.m.
